In ancient times, knowledge was primarily passed down through oral traditions. Written records emerged much later, allowing scribes to preserve India’s rich literary, scientific, spiritual, and astrological heritage for generations.

Various materials were used for recording knowledge, including granite slabs, copper plates, and tree bark. However, palm leaves were traditionally chosen for preserving Nadi Astrology.

Skilled scribes carefully etched each letter onto specially prepared dried palm leaves using a fine stylus. The process was done entirely by hand, with great care taken to prevent the delicate leaves from splitting. The writing was generally continuous, without spaces between words, making the leaves challenging to interpret and requiring expertise in ancient Tamil or Sanskrit.

Once the inscription was completed, lamp black or turmeric was applied to enhance the visibility of the writing, while oil was used to help preserve the leaves. The leaves were then organized according to thumbprint categories or soul groupings and carefully bound with a cord between two wooden covers, forming the traditional Nadi leaf bundles.
